When does my horse need an extra warm blanket?
A liner should be used when your horse needs extra protection in cold or wet weather conditions . . We recommend the liner for sensitive, thin or older horses on particularly cold nights at temperatures below -10 °C.
Also in spring or fall (below 7 °C), when horses have thin coats, it can be a good idea to blanket your horse with a woolen liner. In very cold, heavy rain that lasts for hours, horses can feel cold in extreme cases despite a waterproof rain rug.
If you want to put a paddock rug on your wet horse after a cold rain, a wool blanket liner helps to dry the horse quickly even in cold temperatures.
In winter, we recommend using the Rug Liner for horses that are very sweaty . In damp weather, even the best Cooler Rug can take a long time to dry it off, so the horse may have to be put back with the paddock rug. In sub-zero temperatures, the under rug makes it easier to perspire under the rain rug.
What should I look out for when buying a warming under rug for my horse?
First of all, you should make sure that the cut of the liner is compatible with the rain rug above it. Our softshell rain rug and the wool liner are perfectly matched and do not cause any pressure points or fit problems.
1: The rain rug worn over the wool liner should be reliably waterproof to prevent damage to the fabric.
2: Another important factor is the material. We use our favorite fabric: wool. It warms without overheating the horse and ensures a pleasant microclimate. Wool is also breathable and moisture-absorbent, which helps the horse to dry more quickly.
As wool does not allow a moist, humid, sweaty environment and has an antibacterial effect, it prevents skin irritations such as fungal infestation, which can occur if a paddock rug is worn for too long and is too warm.
Wool also promotes blood circulation, accelerates recovery after training and helps with back pain.
4: Finally, you should also consider the weight of the liner blanket . Conventional paddock rugs and under rugs are often very heavy. This can prevent the horse from keeping itself warm, as the weight of the blanket prevents the hair from rising up to keep warm. So horses can get cold despite the rug. Our softshell rain rug is as light as a feather, and the wool under rug adds hardly any extra weight, but supports the thermoregulation of the horse
How can I tell if my horse is cold?
Not every horse feels cold equally quickly. Factors that influence the predisposition to get cold are the thickness of the coat, little subcutaneous fatty tissue or a low body mass, health problems, back problems, the rank in the herd and the age of the horse. It is therefore always a good idea to observe your horse.
AAcute signsthat your horse is cold are a hunched back, a pinched mouth, trembling, wet coat down to the undercoat, a pinched tail and a disgruntled, unwilling attitude. The horse may also be withdrawn and introverted.
Over a longer period of time , a horse shows that it is cold if it loses a lot of weight over the winter, as it has to invest more energy in keeping warm than it has left. Frequent tension can also be a sign.
How do I use the wool liner?
For a healthy Icelandic horse, we recommend using the liner only on particularly cold nights or after sweating, and only in individual cases. It is not necessary to prophylactically blanket healthy Icelandic horses with winter coats in a thicker rug throughout the winter - that would be too warm.
The under rug made of cozy wool is the ideal complement to our softshell rain rugs, as it keeps your horse pleasantly warm without causing overheating and reliably wicks away moisture. It provides an additional layer of protection and increases the horse's well-being in bad weather conditions.
Whether as a warming layer or as a sweat rug under a rain rug - wool liners are versatile and adapt to the individual needs of horse and rider.
